Distance from bottom of lens holder to honeycomb

Post by lauckstreet »

I just finished assembling my 600 x 400 frame, installed the x-y table and put the honeycomb in place and I'm a bit concerned about the distance from the bottom of the lens holder to the top of the honeycomb. It appears to be a bit tight and I haven't even begun to do any alignment things. The lens holder is all the way up in the mount and I know when I begin alignment and testing, it's probably going to have to come down some to get proper focus and when it comes down, the distance between the bottom of the lens holder and the honeycomb is going to be so narrow I'll be very limited in the thickness of material I want to cut.

How much space should there be between the bottom of the lens holder and the top surface of the honeycomb to allow for proper focusing and sufficient space for different thicknesses of material?

Thanks,

It depends on the focus point lens you have. There is 38.5mm, 50.8mm, 63.5mm, 68.5mm, 75.0mm, 100mm, 150mm...
The focus point is the distance from the lens surface (facing down) to the object being cut or engrave. You need to measure the distance of the lens from the surface to the laser head tip, add the distance of gap (the distance between the laser tip to the engraving object) and made up to the focus point.

Example:
If you lens you have is 68.5mm
Distance from the surface of lens to the laser tip is 44mm
Then, the air gap between the laser tip to the object would be: 68.5mm - 44mm = 24.5mm

Yes, I understand but I don't have 5mm between the tip and the honeycomb and that's with the lens holder all the way up, there isn't enough room between it and the honeycomb to set it to anything greater than 5mm. I could set it less than 5mm but I don't think the space between the tip and honeycomb should be that close, there's no room for any kind of adjustments.

You can lower the the frame that used to support the honeycomb. It is fully adjustable.

Aha, I see now, that's what I need to do. Thanks,
