power supply 80w for 40w (700) laser tube?

Post by Poltergeistas »

Hello,
I'm just started k40 upgrade to dsp. now waiting for my upgrade kit dsp.
recently bought power supply 80w. can I use it directly or I need to do any conversions that I could use with 40w laser tube?
here is some spec:
This high frequency CO2 laser power supply is dedicated for CO2 laser device, with high efficiency, high frequency and short response time. This compact power supply has excellent compatibility with many laser device and can be directly connected. With this power supply laser device will easily start up and operate with high conversion efficiency and there for longer tube life. Peak output power of the laser would be up to 90W and average output power is 80W.The power is adjustable through it's TTL control or by the variable resistor. It supports any CO2 laser for up to 80Watt. Small design with an excellence PWM control circutry. Input AC220V. Maximum Output Voltage DC 35KV. Maximum Output Current DC 35ma. Efficiency ≥90%(full load}. Response Speed ≤1ms. Pressure-proof Input-Output, Input-Shell: AC1500V 10mA . Operating Temperature: 10~40 c. Cooling Force-Air Cooling.Dimensions L×W×H= 240 * 190 * 10 (mm)

thank you! :)

Better not to use a 80W PS for a 35W or 40W laser tube. It is OK for power up a 60W tube but not for smaller. And image of that power supply?
It sounds like that it is description I used for the power supply I'm selling on eBay

This supply I bought from guy who wanted to build laser, but when he decided to sell all parts. I think he bought it from USA. The price was very low so thats why I bought it. Thought I can use with 40w tube and later upgrade to 50w tube. :( Well needs to spend more money now :(
here is some images of supply:

So there is no chance to use this supply?
I found who is on ebay selling supply:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HIGH-FREQUENC ... 35b80b5f8a
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HIGH-FREQUENC ... 3a87bda486
Are they good enough? This UK seller so its better for me no VAT or duty taxes.

Thank you

The power supply you have seems is a good one even though it doesn't looks good. Those two high voltage transformer is quality made and last longer.

The ebay power supply is OK but the ebay seller is NOT located in UK but in Hong Kong. May be they have someone doing distribution for them. I read some folks complained this seller, either from Buildlog.net or from CNCZone.com. You may want to do some research how do they handle warranty.

So there is no chance to use my 80w supply? even somehow limiting power output?

Let say if I`m getting 60w supply from ebay. is it gonna be fine using with 40w tube ( I want more powerfull supply because in the future I`m gonna put another tube with 50w power.

sorry that I asking such a stupid question, electrical side is not my strongest side. I thought that you can adjust settings through software. I saw there you can control ttl and pwm settings. I thought through that setting you control laser supply which sends power to a tube and won't go more than ~22mA let say. this way preventing damage to a tube.

80W power supply got higher triggering voltage while 40W power supply got lower. The high triggering voltage is not doing any good to the small power laser tube and it could cause damage. It is not just about the current that a DSP controller can be in control but the high voltage that a DSP can't take control on it

thank you for your help! I need to order another supply then. is 60w would be fine for my tube?
that 80w supply maybe I'll keep for another project. :)

I'm almost done adjustable table. now I need stepper motor for this table. what stepper motor would you advice with awc608 controller? do I need additional stepper drive for y control?

It is too high! That spec look like it is a 80W PS. You need small power supply or you may sorry to your laser tube

what spec I should look? because ebay description with manual link is different from description.
is laser power supply is used only with the same "W"?
how lightobject supply can work with different wattage tubes? is there any switch inside a supply? :)
thank you!
why manufacters do with higher spec supply and saying it can work with lower W tubes. like this http://m.alibaba.com/product/1331256471 ... tions.html

Marco is spot on with the triggering voltage not doing any good to the tube.
But I would like to add, that one condition that it might be beneficial is,
when you do engraving, it could help with a more responsive laser, but again
you need to use the ppm, and be extra careful on your power levels(careful
use of ppi will help with avoiding any local heating of electrodes, and the
low power operation(verified with a power meter) will prevent electrode
vaporization and contamination due to higher voltage operation, which is the
typical failure mode of most gas laser tubes.
But in short, it is not worth the trouble.
