D40/K40 Battery, Card, Lens Components.

Post by migusan76 »

Hello, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I recently purchased a D40/K40 laser, and it arrived the other day. Everything looks good for the most part other than a few things that look strange to me, but not to sure since I'm still learning about all these and from my research online these components are different that what I see most everyone has.

First the seller is claiming that the power supply is PWM capable, but looking at how crappy and rusty it is I honestly doubt that. How can I tell what kind of battery it is.

So this model came with this laser card which I've seen nothing about on the internet and I'm wondering if it is any good? It is probably the highest quality looking thing in the laser cutter.

The main mirror lens from where the laser fires looks like its burned, I'm wondering if this is bad or normal. I'm trying to get the seller to replace it at the moment, but I'm sure that probably won't happen and I'll just end up getting a new one.

Thanks for any information you guys might provide!

My K40 arrived with mucky mirrors too, but a good cleaning with acetone put them right.
I can't speak for the power supply or the board (my board was a 'Moshi' with dongle and incomprehensible software!) but by the look of it you'd be well-advised to do what many of us have done:

– Count the money spent as good value for a cabinet, laser tube, X-Y mechanics and mirrors.
– Strip out ALL the electronics (NOT the motors or wiring to the tube though), enlarge all wiring holes and fit them with grommets
– Buy LightObject's DSP controller, power supply and related bits (Marco will list them for you - get EXACTLY what he suggests)
– Fit it all in and sit back and enjoy a really good, still-value-for-money (albeit rather more than you expected) laser engraver/cutter with decent control, better power and massive amounts of support through this forum.

That's the best I have to offer.

I second what Nick said. Go to the main Lightobject site and click on LASER AND CNC on the left side, then click on D/K40 SMALL MACHINE PARTS and order the DSP upgrade kit for $580.00. It will be a very worthwhile investment. I would also order an 18mm diameter, 50.8mm focal length quality lens. Looks like Marco now has the 40W DSP power supply in stock if yours is not DSP (I think it is not, but might be wrong). The power bed kit is also a great addition. Once you do all this you will make a not very good laser into a very good laser.

Thanks Nick and Brian for the advise! I actually had planned on going that route and doing a conversion of the laser. I was just trying to figure out what these parts where and if they where even worth keeping, at least if the power supply was good. Although just from looking it it, doesn't really look like its a good quality. I actually got a chance to test it out and it was working ok for what it is, but turns out that smudge on that mirror was really that the mirror came cracked somehow. So at least the seller is going to send me a new one so I can replace it and like you said nick count it as mirror parts I won't have to buy for an upgrade. Still on the fence about going with the conversion at this point, not because it won't be worth it. I'm sure once all of the upgrades are in place the machine will run very well, but I didn't realize how small the cutting area was or mainly that I would actually need something larger for the purposes I want to use it for. So I'm just debating on taking my losses and finding someone who wants to buy this model so I can just look back into building my own or just cannibalize the components out and build another bigger housing unit for it.
