very hot Stepper motor even when stopped

Post by 1n2 »

Hi Guys
Been out of here for quite a while...

Still having 'fun' issues though  ..... I will come back to the other issues in another post.

I often have to re-align the beam ( vibration I imagine) well this time I discovered the x axis motor is getting almost too hot to touch and this is with machine standing idle...all settings in the drivers are the same for the X and the Y ...anyone offer any suggestions??

If you're having 1A or above setting on the motor driver, put it down to 0.6A or so. Also, make sure you use "Half current" on the driver setting. When a stepping motor is not spinning, it need current to hole the brake to stop the shaft, just like holding a brake on a car

Thanks Marco

I will check that ...although the Y axis one stays cool with same setting?

The motor Y is different. It taks 0.8a to 1a depends on the model. That's why it stay cooled when idling.

Thanks Marco

That's done the trick..if I didn't have to keep re-aligning the beam  I would never have discovered that!!

I shall be moving soon and I hope to have a larger workshop and am looking closely at one of the 900 x 600 XY stages kit.

FYI, a stepping motor can sustain temperature up to 80'C before it is getting de-magnetized. So, avoid to have stepping motor temperature go over 80'C

I'm working on a new shipment of 900x600. The departing date is scheduled sometimes on next week and it will take about a month to reach our warehouse in California
Plus, a new design of power Z table (600x400) is completed and 30x unit will be shipped alone with the same shipment.
