Creating new layer

I have some text that I want to engrave on wood. If I draw a rectangle around it, I need to have a cut layer separate from the engrave layer. How do I get a new layer so I can have the cut and engrave on the same file? Sometimes when I add something to an existing file, a new layer comes up, but don't know why. Thanks. DSP9 controller with lasersoft V7.22.2.

Thanks to the support team at light object I figured it out. I re-installed my software and it's good now. I couldn't get a new layer by pressing a new color tab. Old computer, minor glitch. I knew I had done it before.... Thanks
