K40 new power supply wiring without DSP upgrade

Post by Zee »

I purchased the following LO Power supply to replace the stock one. I have looked at the forums and not seeing any wiring diagrams to see how I would do this. I am currently not upgrading to a DSP controller just replacing the power supply. Since the LO power supply does not have a 24v supply I have a separate 24v unit. I am not excited to wire it and have the machine blow up on me so I am asking for assistance. Attached is a photo of my old PSU.

http://www.lightobject.com/20W45W-PWM-C ... V-P71.aspx

The connections on the old PSU are:
1st block of 4 is
1) to ampmeter
2) Ground
3) to main power on/off switch
4) to main power on/off switch

Block of 6 is
1) to laser on/off
2) to laser on/off
3) TTL to laser test button
4) GND to laser test button, purple is joined to it and goes to potentiometer/rotary left
5) IN to potentiometer/rotary middle
6) 5V to potentiometer/rotary right

last bock of 4 is to M2Nano board
1)24v
2)Ground
3)5v
4)L

The new power supply has:
FG AC AC TH TL WP G IN 5V has Ground in back of PSU

I have tried following the diagram in this link as a guide. But I am just not comfortable turning the machine and have it go up in smoke.
download/file.php?id=3590&mode=view

So here is what I am was thinking maybe someone can verify my connection

New LO PSU to (pin) connection on Old PSU
ground/negative back of psu to mA Meter
First set
FG >>> Ground
AC >>> (3) power on/off
AC >>> (4) power on/off

Second set
TH >>>
TL >>> L(M2Nano board) & (1) laser on/off
WP >>> (3) test button & (2) laser on/off
G >>> (4) test button & (4) potentiometer
IN >>> (5)potentiometer
5V >>> (6)potentiometer & ((5v)M2Nano board))

M2Nano connection
24v >>> to POS terminal on 24v PSU
G >>> to NEG terminal on 24v PSU
5V >>> to 5v on LO PSU
L >>> to TL on LO PSU

Thanks in advance if you can make sense of the above and able to give me feedback.

Are these 220V or 110v AC power supplies?

Should be pretty straight forward really.

Th Ammeter connection is that for the mA meter? If it's for the mA meter then that should hook to the ground black or blue or white wire coming out of the top of the power supply for the laser.

The others should be hooked into the new supply the same as the old one. WP to WP, Gnd to gnd, ttl to ttl, and so on.

It look like the old ps also provided 24 and 5v to the rest of the system. You'll also need a 5v supply to replace the 5v coming out of the old ps. But for the 24V it's a simple mater of hooking the neutral to the neutral and 24V to the 24V side of the new 24V power supply.

Thanks, it seems straight forward until you finish wiring it and think to yourself "I never wired a thing in my life, what was I thinking? Could this really blow up in my face? Do I really want to plug it in and press power?"

Good news, I double checked my work and realized I had a couple wires switched around and once I fixed it I turned it on and everything worked. Now onto alignment.

Once I have a few more minutes I will post an actual diagram of how I wired it for other newbies that may find themselves in a situation of replacing just the PSU.

Granted in hindsight I should have saved up and got the DSP upgrade along with the PSU and could have wired it all at once. Live and learn.

It will still be an easy upgrade if you go that route later on. I refurbished an old BrightStar engraver and you'd be surprised how much wiring actually came out that wasn't used after the upgrade.
